Long lasting water bottles have become as much a fashion accessory statement as any other item. Available in a variety of designs, colours and sizes they flood the retail environment with a vast choice to choose from.

However, one type of water bottle stands out from the crowd. Not only is this water vessel bang on trend with its metallic appearance, it also boasts a number of health benefits and properties, making this something of a must have product.

Copper water bottles are having a moment- but the concept of drinking water from a vessel made from copper is not a new idea, it is in fact centuries old and originates from Ayurvedic principles. Originating in India more than 5,000 years ago the word Ayurveda in Sanskrit translates as “The Science of Life.” Ayurveda is a holistic approach to medicine that focuses upon prevention, based upon a delicate balance of the mind, body and spirit. This ancient practice recommends drinking water from a copper vessel in order to boost the immune system and kill harmful bacteria.  These thoughts have now been substantiated by scientific studies that show drinking water from a copper water vessel does have health benefits.

Copper is an essential trace mineral that our bodies need in order to function. Whilst we only need a very small amount of this mineral it should not be underestimated the huge role it plays in our survival. Copper cannot be made by the body and so we need to get our daily recommended allowance of copper from other dietary sources. (See our page on foods that are high in copper) It is also believed that drinking 2-3 glasses of water that has been stored in a copper vessel is another way of getting your recommended allowance.

Why is Copper is important for our body?

Benefits of drinking Copper Water

Scientific studies tested water which had microbially contaminated water in a copper vessel. Upon leaving the water for 16 hours at room temperature scientists could not trace any of the bacteria within the water- the study also found that the water had become more alkaline which is believed to have a number of health benefits also. When the study was carried out again but this time comparing the findings of bacteria in water from a copper vessel and a glass container- it showed again that no bacteria could be recovered from the copper vessel, but bacteria was found within the glass containers. The scientists found that copper traces were found in the water content of the water from the copper vessels.  When water is stored for at least 8 hours within a copper vessel copper ions dissolve into the water in very small amounts.

It is believed that the best way to consume the water is to fill the water bottle up at night before bed- and then drink the water in the morning after 8 hours have passed, giving you the maximum health benefits of the infused copper water.

Not only do copper water bottles provide some reassuring health benefits they are very bang on trend with copper accessories providing one of the most popular key looks within interiors and fashion.  Here we compare some of our favourite copper water bottles in different designs.
